How does your institution disseminate natural history research?

This is a call for participation in a scientific publishing community consultation

Extended deadline for participation: October 1, 2010

The Scientific Publishing department of Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle and EDIT have launched two community consultations on Natural History Institutions as publishers of scientific journals. Individuals envisioned to take part in the consultation are librarians and/or publishing staff from in and outside EDIT. The consultation process has the format of a questionnaire survey that want to collect information on titles from all sub-disciplines in natural history science (e.i. Zoology, Botany, Geology, Paleontology, Anthropology). The twoquestionnaires cover questions on scope, organization and dissemination of scientific titles.

The questionnaire forms can be downloaded here (may take a few secondes):

1) Survey publishing staff: Journals and Series in Natural History Institutions

2) Survey librarians: Journal Exchange Programmes in Natural History Institutions

Please return the forms as an attachment (pdf) to Laurence Bénichou (benichou[at]mnhn.fr), either use the Abobe "send" option at the right corner of the form.

Background and urgency of the consultation

Natural History Institutions as publishers build on a long tradition and experience. Many institutions publish one-or more journals, often in-house. The recent digital transition in scholarly publishing offers room for new opportunities for publishing institutions but these come hand in hand with new challenges. The shift from paper to the Web demands for a novel publishing approach and technical expertise. The outcome will be of interest to the wider natural history research community.

The results of the consultation will go in the public domain, possible sensitive information such as names of respondents, institutions and publication titles will be anonymised.
