2010 will be an exciting year for Kew as we continue to focus on the Breathing Planet Programme.  The programme was launched in 2009, Kew’s 250th anniversary year, and is Kew’s action plan to inspire and deliver plant conservation worldwide.

This post will provide expertise in the field of biodiversity informatics supporting the delivery of an EU-funded project – FP7 Palms. Working closely with the science applications team (IT) and consulting with key scientists, the post holder will ensure that the project’s aims and objectives are met which include the continued maintenance and extension of Palmweb, a biodiversity information portal delivering content on palms of the world online.  In addition, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of a clear strategy for the management and maintenance of palm data within the broader eTaxonomic and IT agenda at Kew.

As well as this, the role will include individual specialisation-based (eTaxonomy 0r project) work designing, implementing and releasing software systems to meet user needs. The post holder will mentor and supervise colleagues and other staff as required and carry out user training and support.

Proactive and personable, the post holder will possess a recognised qualification in Computer Science 0r Biodiversity Informatics, 0r equivalent work-based knowledge. Proven expertise in the creation, support and maintenance of one 0r more of the following is essential: Sybase Adaptive Server and MySQL, Java, HTML, Eclipse and/0r CVS, Unix/Linux and BPMN, UML 0r DSDM. Additionally, a background in using procedural and object-orientated programming techniques is required, as is first rate communication skills in order to liaise confidently with internal and external stakeholders.
