ALTER-Net is a sister network of EDIT, focussing on creating and developing LTER (Long-Term Ecological Research) sites in Europe.

The course aims to give students a solid background in the systematics, taxonomy and morphology of
selected invertebrate taxa. The course will be given in conjunction with a workshop gathering an
international group of 20 well renowned systematists/taxonomists covering Porifera, Cnidaria,
Crustacea, Bryozoa, Nemertea, Annelida, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Tunicata. The course will
provide an excellent learning environment and discussion forum for advanced students of marine
invertebrate taxonomy and systematics.

The United Nations have declared 2010 to be the Biodiversity Year. The Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences and the National Botanic Garden of Belgium join the numerous initiatives in organizing a three days symposium. All groups of plants – green plants, fungi, selected groups of protists – will be covered. Themes are (1) history of exploration, (2) study of richness, evolution and conservation, and (3) traditional and modern uses. Geographical emphasis is tropical.
